Query Difficulty for Digital Libraries

Research in query difficulty deals with the task of determining how well or poorly a query is likely to perform given a search system and a collection of documents. If the performance of queries can be established in advance of or during the retrieval stage, specific steps can be taken to improve retrieval. In this report, a categorization of existing algorithms is introduced and various algorithms are briefly assessed. The research questions are outlined and where possible first results are reported.
